Status symbol - for many, a fountain pen is a status symbol. A pen is a great way to complement a suit. Even if a pen is just used for school, the fact that it is relatively unique (at least in the United States) can help boost one’s “coolness” factor in school.
Smoothness - a fountain pen nib, for the most part, will be smoother than the ball point of a ball point pen and thus you will be able to write without putting as much pressure, which allows you to write for longer periods of time.
Variety - the customization of a fountain pen nib are countless. The width of the pen can be altered (think of it as 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm, 0.9 mm, etc. for pencils). Additionally, the nib can be altered other ways, such as added flex or a thicker cross-stroke than a down-stroke, to achieve other effects. Finally, the different types of ink (e.g. shimmer inks, inks with sheen, different shades of any color, etc.) allow there to be differences even between fountain pens.
